Free help for families with mental illness

A Colorado Springs non-profit agency is encouraging people with serious mental illness and their family members to sign up for a free support class. The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Colorado Springs is sponsoring its free Family-to-Family class for family members partners, and friends of persons diagnosed with serious mental illness. 

The twelve week course meets on weekly basis with one class beginning September 2, 2008 and another on September 10, 2008. Class size is limited and registration is required. 

The Family-to-Family Education Program covers Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder (also known as Manic Depression), Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Panic Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and co-occurring brain/addictive disorders. It also includes coping skills, handling crises and relapse, basic information about medications, listening and communication techniques, problem-solving skills, recover and rehabilitation and self-care.

NAMI is a national non-profit support and advocacy group with over 1,000 local and state affiliates. They offer information and support for individuals with mental illnesses and their families.
