Mesa Verde National Park, Colo. Published 94 day(s) ago

Mesa Verde National Park in the southwestern corner of the state is bigger by nearly a half
square mile. The $1.6 million acquisition of the 324-acre Henneman family parcel at the entrance to the park was celebrated Saturday.

The land was transferred to the National Parks Service on July 25. Senators Ken Salazar and Wayne Allard sponsored the Mesa Verde National Park Boundary Act that was approved in December. It also include the addition of a 38-acre parcel donated by the Mesa Verde Foundation, right off of U.S. 160.

Mesa Verde contains 82-square miles of mesa tops, canyon alcoves and more than 4,000 known archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloans, commonly called Anasazi. More sites are frequently discovered including petroglyphs.
