Vandals struck the memorial for fallen firefighters in downtown Colorado Springs. Local firefighters say someone broke several lights and tried to pry a plaque off its base. They estimate the damage will cost $8,000-$10,000.
“It’s horrible,” said Jerry Montella, the IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial Coordinator. “I can't believe that anyone would want to come to such a sacred place and destroy something that people look forward to coming and seeing every year.”
The landscaping lights cost about $1,000 each.
The union is now looking into how to pay for the repairs and say they may have to install security cameras. They say the memorial has been vandalized once before about three years ago when someone broke a couple of lights.
It’s a busy corner in a fairly well-lit area so firefighters think someone may have seen something. If you have any information, call them or police.
