Former 4th District Deputy District Attorney Dan May told News First Tuesday afternoon he is considering running against John Newsome. First term D.A. Newsome has come under fire since last week when News First aired hidden-camera video that showed him drinking roughly 130 ounces of beer over a five hour period on a recent afternoon and evening and then driving a county-issued vehicle.
May is now Chief Deputy District Attorney for the 18th Judicial District, which covers Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln Counties. He ran against Newsome in 2004 and lost.
May told News First since our investigation first aired, he's been "contacted by several people inside and outside the (El Paso/Teller) D.A.'s Office voicing concerns "about the office." He said this has come up suddenly and "I am very seriously contemplating what to do next." He confirmed he has contacted the Secretary of State's Office about petitioning to get on the ballot. Both Newsome and May are Republicans.
