Fourth Judicial District Attorney John Newsome told The Gazette that he apologizes for drinking nearly the equivalent of a 12-pack of beer, then driving a county-owned vehicle. Newsome has steadfastly refused to return phone calls from News First investigative reporter James Jarman.
The Gazette reports Newsome said "I sincerely apologize for ever allowing myself to be placed in that situation where there's even a perception of wrongdoing," Newsome said. "Perception can be as damaging as actual wrongdoing ... even the appearance is a distraction for the office."
Reporter Dennis Huspeni appeared on News First at 5 p.m. on Wednesday to talk about his conversation with Newsome. "I would definitely say that he was embarrassed that he let himself be put in such a situation where he was filmed like that and he admitted it was a distraction to the office and he wants to get back to prosecuting the crimes in El Paso and Teller Counties."
Huspeni said Newsome is no longer attacking the report aired by News First at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
