Projected drop in tourism hits Aspen city budget

With a dip expected in the tourist economy, Aspen city leaders are considering $6 million in cuts in the budget for next year.  That would include $4.1 million in capital improvements that were either deemed unnecessary or would be delayed.

The proposed cuts would affect some curb and gutter repairs, certain upgrades to recreation facilities, the addition of a sidewalk on part of Highway 82, and an e-commerce upgrade to the
city's Web site that would have allowed people to pay utility bills and parking tickets online.

The City Council expects to discuss the 2009 budget Monday. City financiers have forecast a 1 percent increase in sales tax revenues for 2009. Some projects could proceed if revenue improves.
