Clint Vahsholtz and Bobby Regester have 15 combined super stock car titles at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
“There's lot of fast guys up here,” said Regester. “Layne [Schranz] is fast, Lynn [Cowan] is fast. There's a lot of competition up here between a few of us, so it makes it fun. It's anybody's race on any given day.”
But all eyes should be on Regester and Vahsholtz. Vahsholtz' run at his 12th straight stock car title ended suddenly last year when his car broke down on the way up.
“That's the Pikes Peak gremlin,” said Vahsholtz. “Everybody has told me about it. It's just, when's that going to happen to you.”
And Regester took advantage, winning his fourth super stock title.
“I wish he would have finished,” said Regester. “We would have felt better about it. It would be more satisfying if we both finished and I came back and beat him, sure.”
“I would have felt the same way if I was in his shoes,” said Vahsholtz. “We're up here year around and our team works hard. We don't want anything given to us. You want to beat the guy.”
The races begin Sunday at 9 a.m. at Pikes Peak.
