As wrestler Henry Cejudo proudly wore the Olympic gold medal Tues. morning, his biggest fan cheered more than six thousand miles away.
Nelly Rico watched nervously as her son fulfilled his dream.
“We were expecting he was going to win," Rico said in Spanish. "He worked hard for this."
His hard work started young. As a star athlete at Coronado High School, coaches saw something different in Cejudo. “He's got skills, he's got speed, he's got strength, he's got it all, but that heart of his is what got him there,” said Matt Brickell, a coach and teacher at Coronado.
Watching him compete in Beijing, Brickell couldn't have been more proud. “I'm going to get emotional here, but for that kid to do that,” he said. “He always said he was going to do it. You have so many things that get in the way, but he worked through it and got it.”
Reaching his life-long goal as loved ones here in the Springs and people around the world watched.
