Michael Phelps Olympic run is over. This week some of that Summer Olympic spotlight may shine on the “First Family of Taekwondo.”
It’s pretty hard to miss the Lopez family from Sugar Land, Texas. They’re everywhere from the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” to television commercials.
“That's so cool”, says Steven Lopez. “Just to be able to walk down your local grocery store and just see your face on the packages.”
Brothers Steven and Mark and sister Diana are all gold medal favorites in Beijing. And they’re all coached with their oldest brother Jean.
On a recent visit to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Jean told News First reporter Jordan Mason, “You heard it here first; we're going to win three gold medals.”
That’s really not a stretch. In 2005, the three Lopez siblings made sports history when they all won gold at the world championships. Plus, Steven has won gold medals at the past two Summer Games.
The Lopez’ are the first family to send three siblings to the Olympics since 1904.
Taekwondo competition begins Wednesday in Beijing.
