Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama says he has decided on a running mate, but he is not saying who it will be. Obama told USA Today Thursday, that he went with someone who is independent and would challenge him in the White House. He also said he wanted someone who is prepared to be president and would help him strengthen the economy.
Obama says he will not reveal anything else about the decision until he announces it. He plans to do so in a text message to supporters sometime before Saturday afternoon, when he is scheduled to appear with his pick in Illinois.
A little-known Texas congressman appears to be emerging as a possible pick. Democratic officials say Chet Edwards is one of the few Democrats whose background was checked by Obama's campaign. His name is now added to a list of possible running mates, including Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, Sen. Joe Biden and Sen. Evan Bayh.
