Crews from Colorado Springs Utilities have gone to Kansas to help restore electricity. A huge swath of the country is experiencing massive power outages because of an ice storm.
The crews loaded up trucks and hit the road Wednesday afternoon. Utilities managers assessed the local need and decided that the crews could be spared. The 25 workers will help clear debris and get downed power lines back up and running.
Many of the crew members set aside important commitments to help. "I've got family coming in this week," said Marlin Bales, Utilities worker. "I've got a Christmas Party this weekend at my house...My son, a couple of kids, will be back for kind of an early Christmas I'll be missing out on, but if we don't go out and help, then those people might not even get a Christmas."
The crews expect to work 12 to 14 hours a days restoring power. Westar Energy in Kansas is paying all their expenses.
